Special Interest Groups
At Burke Ward, our Term 4 Special Interest Groups (SIGs) offer students a unique opportunity to explore a variety of activities while connecting with peers from different stages. Students submit their preferences and then participate in their chosen activity for three weeks. These groups are designed to complement our transition programs by encouraging students to mix across stages and discover new interests. Additionally, SIGs help us identify and nurture potential leaders—Stage 3 students who demonstrate high potential in a particular area are invited to co-lead a group alongside staff. Activities include golf, cooking, paper mache, diamond art, coding, weaving, directed drawing, make-do construction, Lego, table tennis, Just Dance, ukulele, and many more, ensuring there’s something for everyone to enjoy and grow.

Tailored learning support
We know every child learns in their own way. That’s why we provide tailored learning support to help each student do their best. Our programs meet different student needs. This includes high potential and gifted students, students with additional needs or disability, and those who need wellbeing support. At our school, your child will get the support they need to succeed. Our school has three support classes for K-6 students with additional learning needs. The size of our support classes is smaller than mainstream classes meaning our higher needs students get the personalised support they need to thrive.

Burke Ward Home Reading Program
At Burke Ward, we encourage all students to engage in our Home Reading Program as a vital part of their learning journey. Reading at home not only enhances literacy skills but also fosters a love for books and storytelling. By sharing stories together, you can help ignite your child’s imagination and curiosity about the world. Classroom teachers are noticing that students who regularly participate in our Home Reading Program show a marked improvement with their reading skills.
If you would like your child to participate in this program, please contact your child’s teacher or the office staff for a permission note. To further support this initiative, we recommend setting aside a few minutes each day for reading. Whether it’s a picture book, a chapter book, or even a magazine, every bit of reading contributes to your child’s growth. Don’t forget to talk about the stories and ask questions to deepen their understanding and enjoyment!
